Section 1

Staging

If you want your viewer to catch ten balls, it’s not a good idea to throw all of them at the same time. Your viewer will be overwhelmed and catch none of them.

Movie 8.1 Too many balls at once

It’s better to throw your balls one at a time. This doesn’t mean it’s impossible to have multiple animations happening in parallel, but there should always be one clear, main action that the viewer can focus on. Also, the viewer should have enough time to process the information you’re giving them before you present them with the next bit.

Movie 8.2 First scene of our final video

Your message will be even clearer if the elements of your design and your texts carry the same message. Note that we start by animating some abstract shapes, which are prime examples of motion graphics. Once the viewer has seen these shapes, we reveal the words ‘MOTION GRAPHICS’. Later, when the text ‘That speaks to your brain’ appears, the abstract shapes turn into a brain shape. So, the design elements that appear should also support the message of whatever text is on screen. If you stage a scene well, all the elements in the scene will come together to convey a single message.
