Chapter 9

Squash & Stretch: Theory

  1. Hello Life - Good Bye Rubber World
  2. Why Squash & Stretch is not Simple
  3. Passive Squash & Stretch
  4. Active Squash & Stretch

Squash & Stretch is the most important of the famous 12 basic principles of animation. These principles were developed in the early days of animation at the Walt Disney Studios, and were published in the famous book The Illusion of Life by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston. There’s a lot of material available online about those principles, so I won’t repeat it all. If you haven’t heard of these principles, I recommend watching this summary by Vincenzo Lodigiani, and if you have a little more time, this more in depth explanation.

In a nutshell, Squash & Stretch means that objects not only move, but also deform. In this chapter, I want to discuss Squash & Stretch in more detail, as well as adding some of my own thoughts about different kinds of Squash & Stretch and why our brains like it so much.
